OF SCROLLS AND SEALS AND OTHER THINGS

An Overview of Your Award

Your name has been called out by Their Majesties' herald and you find yourself kneeling in front of them to receive an Award of Arms. They present you with a Charter and you return a little dazedly to your seat among cheers of "Hurray".

Sounds pretty simple doesn't it? What has happened and will yet happen behind the scenes is a little more complicated. First, Their Majesties have worked with Their Royal Scribe to have Charters designed that reflect Their personas. The awards for these Charters and the original Scrolls that the Royal Scribe is responsible for include Lion of An Tir, Order of the Carp, Mano d'Oro, Lion's Cub, Court Baronies, Award of Arms, all Grants of Arms, and all Peerages.

Charter designs are created by scribes over the course of the Reign. These designs are printed out with the help of the Charter Deputy who provides blank paper and the seals to be used during the Reign. The Charters are then parceled out to scribes to paint (you sometimes see them being painted at events - come and introduce yourself; we are always looking for new scribes). After they are painted they are returned to the Royal Scribe who keeps a supply ready for Their Majesties.

Their Majesties were going to an event in your area and had received a couple of glowing recommendations* for you. They had the Royal Scribe put your name and the date of your elevation on a painted Charter after which They signed Their names and Their seal was affixed. The herald called you into court and you were elevated by Their Majesties. Either before or just after court a document called a "Court Report" is filled out (who fills this out varies, but the court herald should sign it and verify its accuracy afterwards using their court cards and any name corrections from the recipients), the Court report is sent to Dexter Gauntlet, the herald who is responsible for updating An Tir's Order of Precedence. A copy of the Court Report may be kept by Their Majesties or Their Chief Lady-in-waiting, and the Royal Scribe.

Updates to the OP can take time (currently updates occur within a week of being received) if after this time you notice that your elevation/award is missing from the on-line OP (especially if others who were elevated at the same time are listed) please contact Dexter Gauntlet by sending them a note with the following information - who you are, what award you received, and which day it was given (AS and modern years)** corroboration from a local Peer, Baronial head, or Seneschal who was present may prove helpful to Dexter Gauntlet in verifying the missing information (especially if it was from a past reign). Updates will happen in the order in which they have been received, current Reign updates may happen sooner.

For some elevations or awards an original Scroll is given reflecting the persona of the recipient and written with a unique text specific to them. These are given in Court to those receiving Peerages when there is some advance notice (the person takes a vigil or is becoming a Count, Countess, etc. at the end of Their Reign) and sometimes for those receiving other elevations or awards for which advance warning is given to the Royal Scribe. All Peerage and some other original Scrolls come after the event if they are not ready due to time constraints. Scribes are commissioned to do these Scrolls by the Royal Scribe and sometimes the recipient or their friends (if you are interested in doing one of these scrolls for Their Majesties, please contact the current Reign's Royal Scribe listed here) after the fact. Scribes should be in contact with the Royal Scribe and after completing the assignment deliver it per her instructions. Original Scrolls follow the same sign and seal procedure as Charters except that those depicting the emblazon and blazon of the recipient's registered device and name will be reviewed by Black Lion Principal Herald who will add his seal and signature where appropriate (scribes work with the herald's office while doing Armigerous scrolls to assure accuracy).

Information for Peerages and other original Scroll awards is sent by the Royal Scribe to the Kingdom Scribe so it can be entered on the Roster that tracks original Scrolls assignments and the scribes that do them, this is especially important for those not completed during the Reign. If you feel you have fallen through the cracks please contact both the Royal Scribe for the Reign you received your elevation and the Kingdom Scribe's office so we can check to see whether a scroll is already in process.

If you are missing your Charter (AoA or Grant level awards) please contact the Royal Scribe if given in a recent Reign. For other Reigns the Past Reign Charter Deputy (see Contacts) can help you (this information will be verified against the OP - please clear up missing awards with Dexter Gauntlet prior to contacting the Charter Deputy), for the current or just past Reign, contact the Royal Scribe responsible first - the report may be in the mail:-)

If you have received a Charter for your Armigerous Award (AoAs and Grants) you may contact the Kingdom Scribe's office if your name and device have been registered to have an original scroll commissioned that includes your registered name, blazon, and emblazon. For those who received a Promissory for their elevation (10+ years ago) and haven't yet received a scroll yet, please contact the Kingdom Scribe to confirm that you are on the Roster and that we have your current contact information (no assignments are made without current contact information). For those who received a Promissory and who never intend to register their name and device, but who would still like a Scroll please contact the Kingdom Scribe's office to get a release request verifying you want no heraldry to be used so the Scroll can be assigned.

For any further questions about the Kingdom Scroll system please contact the Kingdom Scribe's office.*Award recommendations do not happen without your help. If you feel that someone deserves an award… WRITE! (Update the recommendation each reign if the elevation hasn't happened.) You are the eyes and ears of Their Majesties when it comes to the good done in An Tir.

**Additional information like who gave you the award at which event is helpful to the scribes especially for those who received their awards on Coronation/12th Night Saturdays. For those who received Kingdom awards from a Prince and Princess of An Tir, Summits, Avacal, or Tir Righ please include information on both the Prince and Princess and the King and Queen at the time. Please have this information ready when registering on the Kingdom Scroll Roster. Currently there is an arrangement through the Scribe's office in Avacal that all Kingdom Awards scrolls will be done by Principality Scribes, if you are from Avacal please register with both the Kingdom's office and with the Principality's Scribal office.
