The Charter System - How it Works

When a person receives an Award of Arms they receive a Charter detailing that Award. When Award promissories were used in the past the Crown obligated itself (promised) to supply the recipient with an Award achievement scroll at some unspecified future date. Promissories were being given out at a rate that was faster than achievement scrolls could be created and thus "the backlog" came into existence. Award Charters were developed in order to end this ever growing backlog of scrolls.

A Charter is a hand-painted quality reproduction and an official document of the Crown (signed and sealed) which ends Their obligation to provide an achievement scroll to the recipient. This process has helped recipients obtain nice looking pieces of art they can be proud of without waiting for their name to com up on the backlog list (or for their name and/or device to be passed so they can even be placed on the achievement scroll "to do" list.)

It had been decided that Award of Arms Charters from past reigns (prior to the reign of HRM Davin and HRM Octavia) would be made available to members of the populace who had been recognized by a Crown prior to the institution and use of the Charter system. (People who usually received photocopied promissories if they received anything at all.)

The Business at Hand:

There are past reign Award of Arms Charters ready and available for distribution. If you received your AA from a Crown begining with the reign of HRM Manfred & HRM Morag there is an AA Charter with your name on it waiting for you to claim it.

We have tried to distribute these charters at events but the logistics of handling, hauling, and protecting Charters has proven to be unworkable at events. This being the case, if you want your Charter, you must send $2.00 (US funds) to cover the cost of postage and a padded envelope, made payable to 'The Kingdom of An Tir - SCA, Inc.' Canadian residents please send $2.50 (US funds) for international postage.

Address your request to:

HL Laurin of Rosewood (L.G. Onstead)
10618 NE 20th Avenue
Vancouver, WA 98823

Your Charter will be mailed to you in the order in which your request was received. You must provide your modern name, the Society name you used when you were given your AA, the name of the reign in which you received the AA, and your telephone number (you must be willing to accept a collect call in case there are questions about your request). Your AA Charter will be sent via first class U.S. post.

Remember, if you have received any Award you can commission a full Achievement Scroll with your Blazon if it is registered with the College of Heralds. Contact the Chief Scribe for information about Achievement scrolls.
