Question
Dear Dame Tamlyn:
My shire cannot send anyone to 12th Night to hand in our Domesday Boke draft - what can we do instead?
Lives Too Far Away
Answer
Dear Lives Too Far Away:
For those of you unable to attend 12th Night and not having a Principality/regional Butler that can take your drafts or who have made arrangements for someone else to please send copies of drafts to:
Tammy Williams
PO BOX 59421
Renton, WA
If sent before January 1st they should arrive in time to go with me to 12th Night and be reviewed by the Heraldry and Cartography Butlers as well. Canadian mail might require more time.
Thanks,
Dame Tamlyn
Question
I'm a bit confused as to page dimensions for the the Domesday book. Do I want my ARTWORK / Design to be 8.25" wide by 12" tall? Then how wide / tall are the actual pages prior to binding? Just wanting to be precise and I could not find the dimensions listed on the website.

Answer
Greetings Domesday Boke Butlers and Scribes and Ai'binn ingen hui Ne'ill,
The final page size is 11"X15" (the folios when folded out flat are 22"X15")- the bokes will be slightly larger than that due to the covers/bookbinding structure. Illuminated/calligraphy pages will only occur on the right half of each side of the folio (22"X15" sheet), the left half is to remain blank for archival purposes.
The margins around the 8-1/4"X12" working area are as follows: top~1-1/4" left side(binding side)~1-1/4" right side~1-1/2" bottom~1-3/4" We didn't decide the final margin sizing until we cut off the deckling this last week and saw how much total paper we had to work with. We are trying to give the "feel" of a medieval book page (narrow inside and top margins, wider bottom and outside margins) which is why the margins are irregular. Those who want to try to go the whole distance can take a 22"X15" piece of paper and do the lines to set up the text area more appropriately to reflect the golden mean.
We pencil stenciled the border lines in this last weekend, if you want more precise lines take a straight edge and measure more exactingly (we were relatively close, but not strictly precise) using the dimensions above. Thanks to HL Tegan of Conwy, Lady Tevenete de Charolais, Lady Bethel Allen, HL Aelana Cordovera, HL Alainne de Lacy, (did I get you all?) for helping process through the paper that we had (more is coming) and to HL Johann Fairhand for getting me to the point of trusting that a machine could cut it all (my hands thank you especially) precisely enough and taking the paper to get it processed.
Drafts MUST be reviewed prior to starting on the pages for the Boke. I am quite serious about this and the fact that the materials used in the Boke be those found on the materials page - acrylics, gel pens, etc. are right out and their use will probably mean that your branch's section will not be included. Do not put fixatives on the pages - if you used the approved materials they shouldn't be necessary.
Additional materials can be approved, but you should have had them approved last summer when we asked that they be tested... contact me about specifics. Additional paper is available at cost ($1.25 per folio sheet) for those who would like to have a back up for "oops" pages or who want to test out their mediums on the paper prior to doing the actual pages.
Warmest Regards, Dame Tamlyn
